Megabytes to gigabytes: decimal vs binary

Storage makers and this tool use the decimal definition, where 1 GB = 1000 MB, so 5000 MB = 5 GB. Operating systems often use binary units, where 1 GiB = 1024 MiB. That difference is why a drive sold as “500 GB” shows up as roughly 465 GiB in your file manager.

Why your drive looks smaller than the label

A 1 TB (1,000,000 MB) drive is only about 0.909 TiB in binary terms — nothing is missing, the two systems just count differently. Use the KB/MB/GB units for decimal and the KiB/MiB/GiB units for what your OS reports.
