Why use Word Counter?
Live counts
Words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and lines update instantly as you type.
Reading time
Estimates how long the text takes to read at an average pace — handy for posts, essays and scripts.
100% private
Everything runs locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone — it even works offline.
Works on any device
No install and no account. Runs in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone.
Count words without uploading your text
Whether you’re hitting an essay word limit, a tweet character cap or a meta-description length, this counter tallies everything as you type. Because it runs in your browser, your draft — published or not — never leaves your device.
What counts as a word or character
Words are runs of non-whitespace characters, matching most word processors and submission systems. Characters are shown both with and without spaces because different platforms (Twitter, SEO meta, SMS) use different rules. Reading time uses a standard 200–250 words per minute; adjust for your audience.
Useful for writers, students and marketers
Paste a blog post to see if it fits the target length. Drop a script to estimate runtime. Check a bio or headline against platform limits before posting. The live update means you can edit in place and watch the numbers move without switching tabs or uploading drafts.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is any run of non-space characters, so the count matches what you’d expect from a word processor. Multiple spaces and line breaks don’t inflate the total.
Do you count characters with or without spaces?
Both totals are shown: characters including spaces, and characters with spaces removed. Many length limits (SMS, bios, meta descriptions) count spaces, while some don’t — use whichever your limit requires.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so whatever you type or paste stays on your device. It’s safe for code, tokens and confidential text, and works offline once loaded.
