Discount math in one line
The sale price is the original times (1 − discount). 30% off $120 is 120 × 0.70 = $84, and you saved $36. For quick mental math, work from 10%: a tenth of $120 is $12, so 30% off is 3 × 12 = $36 off. Prices ending in odd percentages (33%, 15%) are the retailer’s way of making that arithmetic annoying — which is what this calculator is for.
Stacked discounts don’t simply add
A “20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout” deal is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 → $80 → $72, an effective 28%. The gap widens with bigger numbers — 50% plus 30% is 65% off, not 80%. To check a stacked deal, run the first discount here, then use the result as the price for the second.
