How much to tip, where
In the US and Canada, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 18–20% now common in cities; counter service is optional, often a dollar or two. Much of Europe includes service in the price — rounding up or adding 5–10% is a courtesy, not an obligation — and in Japan tipping isn’t practiced at all. When in doubt abroad, check the bill for a service charge first so you don’t tip twice.
Splitting the bill without the awkward math
The cleanest split is bill plus tip divided evenly — that’s what this calculator shows per person, so nobody is doing long division at the table. If you want the tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the pre-tax bill and add the tax back mentally; if close-enough is fine, tip on the total. For uneven orders (one person had the steak), split the shared items evenly and let outliers add the difference.
